Ask DR U: Calvin Johnson for Wes Welker?

Jon asks, I have been offered Calvin Johnson in exchange for Wes Welker, should I do that trade?

DR U: I am not sure how your league is structured, but if you are in a PPR league than you may want to hold onto to Welker.  Welker is an excellent possession receiver out of the slot, and he can be counted on to haul in a lot of receptions.

However, if it is not a PPR league, I would accept that trade in a heartbeat.  Johnson has the potential to be one of the best wide receivers in the game.  The only question mark with him is if he can stay healthy.  Assuming they both can stay healthy in 2008, I would expect Johnson to have a better fantasy season than Welker.

It’s a tough call, I’d say. I think Welker had the season of his career in 2007 - for a possession-type guy, you can’t do much better than what he did - but it was pretty damn good. I don’t expect him to match those numbers in 2008, as it looked like offenses were starting to figure out how to slow Brady down by the end of ‘07 (hit him, hit him hard, and hit him again).

Johnson’s dealt with back issues and they still make me nervous, but he’s still an absolute beast with just about the highest ceiling in the league. I’d make the trade because Johnson’s the kind of guy who could singlehandedly win the matchup for you on any given week with a monster performance.

Has this ever happened to you? One minute and five seconds before my first draft of the 2008 season begins, and my internet crashes. I call my provider and there appears to be a large outage in our area. I was about to blow a gasket. I did the only thing I could do and quickly drove to my parents home, where I got back online in time to draft my fourth selection. The thing I discovered was that I had set my pre draft rankings up earlier in the year and had not kept them up to date. This cost me on two selections, my second pick was Magahee, and the third was A. Gates, both players fighting injuries. I would have made other selections, don’t let this happen to you. Keep your rankings up to date.
    Thanks
