Ask DR U: Can’t Keep Them All

Mike asks, We are having a draft in our two keeper 10-team league, and my problem is who to keep.  I have five very good players that I must choose from (listed below). L.T. is obvious, but there are good reasons for me to keep the others as well.  Gore is solid and impressive, Bush has huge upside, and Addai is the man this year with a great offense around him. What do you think Dr. U?

RB LaDainian Tomlinson
RB Frank Gore
RB Reggie Bush
RB Joseph Addai
QB Donovan McNabb

DR U: My guess is that the rest of your league does not feel sorry for you that you have this kind of problem.  This is like deciding if you want to keep the Ace of Spades or the Ace of Hearts.  Of course, I agree that Tomlinson is a must-keep, and I also agree that your dilemma is with picking the other three that you have enough guts to cut.

Ok, I see it like this… Donovan McNabb and Frank Gore are fantasy studs and will rack up huge numbers.  In fact, if both stay healthy, they will have better statistics then anyone else on your list not named LaDainian Tomlinson.  However, Gore and McNabb are both question marks in terms of their ability to stay healthy over a full season.

Joseph Addai will likely be the best player on your list (discounting Tomlinson) in 2007, but most would argue that Reggie Bush will have the more prolific career.  It is worth noting that many thought Barry Sanders would be a better fantasy player than Emmitt Smith, because he was more elusive than Smith.  However, Smith was far more consistent and scored a ton more touchdowns.

Therefore, I am going to go against the grain a little, and I am going to recommend that you take Addai over the rest.  Bottom line, with Tomlinson and Addai on your team, wake me up when you are in the playoffs.

    Hi DR U,

I wanted to get your opinion on who would you suggest as my keepers. We can keep 2 players and we can only keep 1 RB. But last year I made a trade to be able to keep a 3rd player, but still only 1 RB. I was planning on keeping Steven Jackson, Marvin Harrison and Marques Colston.

So, who would you suggest to keep. Technically the draft would be 3rd round, since we have 2 freezes and I gave up my 3rd pick, looking back I am not so sure if that was a right move, but I did win the Super Bowl with this lineup.

    Thanks for your input.

    Romo, Tony QB
    Green, Ahman RB
    Jackson, Steven RB
    Branch, Deion WR
    Colston, Marques WR
    Harrison, Marvin WR
    Witten, Jason TE
    Wilkins, Jeff K
    Cowboys, DST DST

    Manning, Eli QB
    Rivers, Philip QB
    Jones, Kevin RB
    Morris, Sammy RB
    Rhodes, Dominic RB
    Jackson, Vincent WR
    Winslow, Kellen TE
    Broncos, DST DST

    Gopi,

Steven Jackson and Marvin Harrison are must-keeps. I have no problem with you keeping Colston, but I would give the nod to Tony Romo. So I would suggest keeping Jackson, Harrison, and Romo.

    Good Luck!

    Dr. U,

I am in a 10 team league and won the league last year with Addai, Gore, Brees, and Bush.

Our league keeps one player and gives up that draft pick that the player was picked in the previous year. My choices are thus:

    Round 4 = Reggie Bush
    Round 6 = Joseph Addai
    Round 8 = Frank Gore
    Round 10 = Drew Brees

I cannot decide against Addai in the 6th or Gore in the 8th. I pick last, so I get the 10-11 combo pick (and throughout).

What do you think? Gore? or Addai?

    Thanks,
    Darin

    Darin,

I give the nod to Addai in a keeper league. I think he will get more combined yards, and more TDs than Gore. Gore will likely get more rushing yards, but keep in mind, Gore had some problems staying healthy last season. Addai has the luxury of being in a Peyton Manning ran offense, and Addai is going to get a ton of touches. Go with Addai!

    Good Luck!
