Ask DR U: Defense Wins Championships
Kyle asks, I would love to hear your analysis off my team. I had the 12th pick in a 12 person draft - we start 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 LB, 1 DL, 1 DB (As you can tell, it is an IDP league). Do you think I should go after someone like Correll Buckhalter?
My team:
QB Jake Delhomme CAR
QB Steve McNair BAL
RB Willis McGahee BUF
RB Brian Westbrook PHI
RB Chester Taylor MIN
RB Vernand Morency HOU
WR Santana Moss WAS
WR Randy Moss OAK
WR Matt Jones JAX
WR Joe Jurevicius CLE
TE Randy McMichael MIA
TE Jeb Putzier HOU
K David Akers PHI
DL John Abraham ATL
DL Jevon Kearse PHI
LB Ray Lewis BAL
DB Chris Hope TEN
DB Terrence Kiel SD
DR U: Your team reminds of the New England Patriots. Yeah, you have a couple big names in Randy Moss and Ray Lewis, but the most part your team is compiled of guys that just get the job done. Delhomme is a reliable second tier quarterback, and McNair is a viable option as a No.2 Quarterback. I expect McGahee to have a huge season, and the rest of your running backs are respectable options.
There is a debate now as to which Moss is the better receiver, but it doesn’t matter in your case, because you have them both. You probably won’t have to play Jones or Jurevicius very often, but when you do have them in your lineup, they are both terrific red zone options. McMichael should have a pro bowl season with Daunte Culpepper as his quarterback. Your linebackers and defensive backs are solid. Kiel is a nice pick, especially if Ed Reed, Roy Williams, and Bob Sanders were already taken.
As far as picking up Correll Buckhalter, I would have to strongly advise you to stay clear of him. He is too injury-prone, but if you are looking for a sleeper at running back, I would suggest taking a flier on Jerious Norwood of the Atlanta Falcons. I would rate your team as a B.

Chad,
Bulger is a great fantasy player when he is in the lineup. Just hold your breath that he will stay healthy. Plummer’s season could go either way. He might play well with Cutler breathing down his neck for playing time, or he might choke and Cutler will take his job before the season is over.
You have a great cast of running backs and wide receivers. I think Fitzgerald, Bryant, and Housmandzadeh are set to have huge seasons. Lelie is an intersting pick. I am guessing you got him deep into the draft. In the later rounds, he worth taking a flier on. I think you have a good team. I would give your team a B+. Good Luck!

Basch,
I think your team has a chance. However, you will need some things to go right for you. I think you will need a superb year out of Bledsoe, which is a possiblity with the weapons he now has.
I think your running backs are good. Rudi Johnson should have a solid year. I especially like your receivers. If Chambers and Johnson have the kind of season that I think they will have, then your team is in good shape.
I wouldn’t be too worried about the Patriots defense. I think you can rely on Cincinnati’s defense. You could always pick up another defense on the Bengals Bye week if you need to. If it allowed in your league, I would suggest even dropping the Patriots defense for another quarterback or running back. Good Luck!
