Ask DR U: Receiver in the First Round?

Tim asks,  Dr U, we are in a 10 man league Last year, our wide receivers, quarterbacks and receivers scored the most fantasy points. I have pick nine, which likely means Brady, Peyton, Moss and the top 5 running backs will be gone. Would it be crazy to pick T.O., Reggie Wayne or Braylon Edwards and pick up quarterback and running back in the 3rd and 4th round?

DR U: I don’t think I would necessarily say it would be crazy to take one of the three receivers you mentioned.  Although, #9 overall might be a little early to take them.  Plus, you would miss out on some of the better running backs like Marion Barber, Marshawn Lynch, Frank Gore, or perhaps even Brian Westbrook.

In other words, I would rather have Marshawn Lynch in the first round and get a receiver like Reggie Wayne, Chad Johnson, or T.J. Houshandzadeh in the second round then not take a running back in the first round and be stuck with only middle-of-the-road running backs on my squad.

However, if you feel strongly about taking a receiver in the first round, then I would say Randy Moss and perhaps T.O. would be the only receivers to come close to warranting that high of a selection.  Lastly, I do think it is wise to wait to the middle rounds to get your quarterback as there should be some good ones still available.
