Fantasy Outlook:

Why you should draft Antonio Gates: Gates has played in ever regular season game since the 2005 season.  Over the last five seasons, Gates has averaged 75 receptions, 974 receiving yards, and nearly 9 touchdowns.  In 2009, Gates had ten games of at least five receptions, and he surpassed 100 receiving yards in three contests.   Gates ended the 2009 season by having a touchdown in each of his last four regular season games.

Why you may want to stay away from drafting Antonio Gates:  Gates has been banged up a lot over the last few seasons, which has made him look pedestrian at times.   Last season, he was limited to under 50 receiving yards in five games.

Bottom Line: Gates is still amongst the upper echelon fantasy tight ends, and he still should be one of the top three tight ends chosen in most fantasy drafts.

Fantasy Outlook:

Why you should draft Antonio Gates: Over the last four years, Gates has averaged 928 receiving yards and nine touchdowns, while only missing one game in that span.   Last season, Gates had at least four receptions in nine games. 

Why you may want to stay away from drafting Antonio Gates: In 2008, Gates had 15 fewer receptions and 280 less receiving yards than he did in 2007.  While Gates seems to play through his injuries, there is little doubt his production dips when he is not 100 percent. 

Bottom Line: Gates can be counted on for playing 16 games, and he continues to be among the most productive at his position.  Consequently, Gates should be considered an upper tier tight end in fantasy.

Why you should draft Antonio Gates: Over the last four seasons, Gates has averaged 79 receptions, 993 receiving yards, and more than ten touchdowns.  Last season, Gates had four games where he hit triple figures in receiving yards, and he had multiple touchdowns in two contests. 

Why you may want to stay away from drafting Antonio Gates:  Gates sustained a toe injury in 2007 that caused his production to slide.  In fact, if you count the post season, Gates averaged just 25 receiving yards was held scoreless in his last six games. 

Bottom Line: Gates has been the premier fantasy tight end for the last few seasons.  If he can recover from his toe injury, he is certainly a No. 1 fantasy tight end again this year.
