WR Nate Burleson, Detroit Lions

How Nate Burleson will help the Lions: Burleson gives the Lions a legitimate threat opposite Calvin Johnson. Johnson will still continue to see the bulk of the double coverage, which means Burleson should have ample opportunities to make opposing defenses pay the price.

Last season, Burleson was twice able to surpass triple figures in receiving yards, and he hauled in at least five receptions in seven contests. In Week 6, he torched the Jacksonville Jaguars with his 98 receiving yards and two scores.

Fantasy Outlook: Burleson seems to be an injury waiting to happen. However, if he can stay healthy in 2010, he could rack up some impressive numbers. Since I am not quite ready to pencil him in for a full 16 game season, I would project him at 875 receiving yards and five touchdowns.

Quarterback: The Lions have about five quarterbacks on their roster, which basically means they have none. Daunte Culpepper is not the long term answer, and it has yet to be determined if that title can be awarded to Drew Stanton. In other words, Detroit will likely look to the draft in search of a franchise signal caller.

Offensive Tackle: Jeff Backus has been under-achieving at best, which opens the door for the Lions to utilize the draft to find their next left tackle. Don’t be surprised if that’s the direction they take with the No.1 overall pick.

Cornerback: The secondary of the Lions only had one interception in all of 2008. Do I really need to say more?

Defensive End: Dewayne White and Cliff Avril are decent pass rushers. However, Detroit could improve their situation by bringing in an every down performer, especially on the right side of the line. With that being said, the Lions could afford to wait until the second day of the draft to address this need.

Wide Receiver: Detroit has a pair of Johnsons in Calvin and Bryant, but the talent at wideout dramatically drops off after the aforementioned duo. Last season, Roy Williams was traded to Dallas, which means the Lions should be shopping for a receiver or two in the draft.

Draft Candidates: QB Matthew Stafford, Georgia, QB Mark Sanchez, USC, OT Jason Smith, Baylor, OT Andre Smith, Alabama, CB Darius Butler, Connecticut, CB D.J. Moore, Vanderbilt, DE Tim Jamison, Michigan, DE Will Davis, Illinois, WR Percy Harvin, Florida, WR Hakeem Nicks, North Carolina

RB Maurice Morris, Detroit Lions

How Morris will help the Lions: Morris has been a career backup, and he figures to come off the bench in 2009 for the Lions also. Morris certainly knows what to do with the football when he is given carries. Over the last three seasons, Morris has averaged 602 rushing yards in mop up duty. In 2007, Morris had a humble 628 rushing yards and four touchdowns.

Fantasy Outlook: The Lions haven’t had much luck with running backs since Barry Sanders retired. However, Kevin Smith did show flashes last season. Look for Morris to put up at least 500 rushing yards and three scores in his time-share with Smith.

Defensive End: The Lions cut Kalimba Edwards, which means there is a vacancy at defensive end. Not to mention, the Tampa 2 defense relies heavily on ends providing heavy pass rush. Look for the Lions to invest an early round pick on a rush end.

Running back: Kevin Jones was cut and T.J. Duckett left via free agency. In other words, the Lions will try to find a featured running back in the draft.

Linebacker: Boss Bailey left town, and Paris Lenon doesn’t exact fit well in their defensive scheme. Look for Detroit to select a middle linebacker at some point in the draft.

Cornerback: The Lions cut Fernando Bryant, and even with Bryant, they allowed the highest completion percentage last season. Detroit signed Brian Kelly, which could end up being an outstanding addition. However, the Lions will still need to bring in more help at secondary.

Draft Candidates: DE Derrick Harvey, Florida, DE Calais Campbell, Miami, RB Reshard Mendenhall, Illinois, RB Mike Hart, Michigan, LB Jerod Mayo, Tennessee, LB Jordan Dizon, Colorado, CB Charles Godfrey, Iowa, CB Jack Ikegwuonu, Wisconsin
